it makes me so uncomfortable when people swear at their parents like i would get straight up beaten if i told my mom to shut the fuck up
Why does this have 45 thousand notes and change?!?! Why is this a text post being circulated so widely without comment or addendum? THAT MEANS YOU HAVE ABUSIVE PARENTS. IF THEY WOULD BEAT YOU FOR SWEARING AT THEM, GENUINELY, NOT HYPERBOLE, NOT AN UNFOUNDED PARANOID WORRY ON YOUR PART, THAT MEANS THEY’RE ABUSIVE.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not approving of or encouraging swearing at your parents; it’s incredibly rude, for one thing, and very rarely justified. The main time when I’d say it is justified is if one or both of your parents were verbally abusing you first. (I still wouldn’t encourage it, but I wouldn’t disapprove.) However this is not exactly in the top five reasons why adolescents swear at their parents.
More importantly, though, beating your kids for swearing at you is not okay. Beating your kids in general is not okay! (Spanking and beating are two very different things, as well, although I’m dubious about whether any form of corporal punishment should be considered acceptable.) But I find it especially abhorrent to think about parents beating their children for a purely verbal transgression that causes no physical injury or destruction. What is even the point? To put your children in their place?
Yes, it’s incredibly disrespectful to swear at your parents, but a parent who would respond to being cussed out by their offspring with a beating doesn’t deserve much respect. (But like I said, it’s still incredibly rude and unlikely to be justified. Swearing at a customer service worker paints you as a rude asshole, and they do a hell of a lot less to improve your life than the average parent does for their kids.)
